twenty-seventh Sunday in ordinary time

by Fr. Boniface Endorf, O.P.

Dear St. Joseph Parish Family,

I’m often asked how people can find out what’s happening at the parish, especially with all the new ministries. The best places for information are the parish website (www.stjosephgv.nyc) and the Sunday bulletin. Also, we send a weekly Flocknote email which contains upcoming events (a new feature!) You can sign up for Flocknote and register at St. Joe’s on the website too—something we strongly encourage everyone attending St. Joe’s to do so that we can better serve you.

This Thursday night at 7pm, I’ll be taking part in an ecumenical dialogue about mysticism within various religions. It’ll be at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola (980 Park Ave.). You can register at ignatianinterfaithministry@gmail.com if you’re interested in joining.

Mass Tidbit

After the Penitential Act, the Gloria is sung. This hymn is very ancient. It was originally in Greek and used to celebrate our Lord’s Nativity (Christmas). Tradition says the Pope Telesphorus (AD 128-139) ordered that it be sung on Christmas, and then it was slowly used on other feast days afterwards. Tradition also holds that St. Hilary of Poitiers (d. 366) translated it into Latin, which is the form we use, whether in Latin or translated into English. In the current liturgical practice of the Roman Rite, the Gloria is sung on Sunday Masses, except for during Advent and Lent, and on feast days. Next week we’ll consider the words of the Gloria itself.

God Bless,
Fr. Boniface
